Winter Rotational Bale-Grazing System
Round bales spread out in a snow-covered field with a few cows feeding on them and a woods in the background

With a Winter Rotational Bale-Grazing System, big round bales are placed and unwrapped (usually in late fall) throughout the pasture area, a portion of which is then cordoned off with electric fence wire so only a certain number of bales are accessible to the animals at a given time. When those initial ones have been consumed, the temporary fencing is moved to allow access to the bales in the next area. Such a system is especially helpful to farmers with mobility impairments because they can set out all the bales before winter arrives. Then all that's required throughout the winter is to periodically move the temporary fencing to a new area-thus no need to work in the cold weather removing net-wrap and twine from frozen bales.
