Foot-Operated, Self-Locking Gate Latch
Bolted to the second board of the four-board gate is the latch assembly consisting of the foot-operated lever mechanism and the long spring-loaded rod, the end of which insets into a hole in the fence post.

The Foot-Operated, Self-Locking Gate Latch can be opened with one's foot when both hands are occupied. A spring-loaded pin on the gate snaps into a hole in the fence post to latch the gate. A lever mechanism on the gate, which can be pushed with the foot, pulls the pin out of the post, and the gate swings open. The hole in the bracket closest to the lever should be slotted vertically to allow free movement of the sliding pin.
