Homemade Mobile Poultry Shelter
Dru Peter's Sunnyside Farm eggs come from laying hens housed in 15 Homemade Mobile Poultry Shelter, each accommodating about 25 birds. The 10- by 5-foot, A-frame-shaped shelters consist of pressure-treated 2 x 4s to which are stapled 1- by 2-inch hardware cloth, the top half of the "A" covered with a heavy canvas tarp. A 12-foot or more pressure-treated 2 x 6 is affixed to the longwise 2 x 4 on each side. Running through those 2 x 6s is a pipe axle with T-fittings onto which the wheels are mounted. Attached to the axle on both sides via another set of T's are 6-foot pipes bent to near-vertical position. To move the pen, a rope attached to another set of T's near the top of the two pipes is pulled downward angling them to a horizontal position; this raises the pen up on its wheels so it can be rolled forward. Inside are roosts mounted under the tarp and a nesting box in the back with a pull-out drawer for egg collection. The bottom, sides, and ends are left open for ventilation and sunlight.
