Chicken Hoop-Coop Poultry House (Online Plans)
Designed primarily for small numbers of free-range-raised laying flocks, the relatively inexpensive Chicken Hoop-Coop Poultry House (Online Plans) is usually portable. Its Quonset hut-type shape reportedly allows it to withstand high winds and heavy snow loads better than squared-off coop designs. Commonly made of wire mesh attached to framing and covered by tarp, metal sheeting, or thick netting, the Hoop Coop allows for plenty of fresh air and sunlight via its open front and/or it sides when uncovered. The birds either run free outside or feed on grass and insects beneath the house's wire floor. The websites of the four sources listed below provide detailed instructions and pictures for building Hoop Coops. (Other sources have for purchase either ready-to-assemble units or complete construction plans.)
Cost range: $50-$500, depending on size, materials use, accessories, etc.
