Homemade Skid-Mounted Chicken Coop
Built by John Houston of Davidsonville (MD) on a steel-tube frame, this Homemade Skid-Mounted Chicken Coop is reportedly easy both to clean out and to move around. Consisting of a 12- by 6-foot pen plus 4- by 6-foot wood coop (elevated about 2 feet off the ground), Houston transports the unit by inserting his Bobcat loader forks into slots in the tubular frame. The coop includes windows, two small doors and ramps for bird access to the pen, a rubber roof, and interior walls and floor covered with slick-surfaced fiberglass tileboard, which makes for easy sweeping and washing. The floor is hinged, allowing Houston to drop down both sides while the chickens are in the pen area, to further facilitate clean-out; a 2- by 3-foot screen closes up on the bottom so he can put litter there. The coop is also equipped with a 300-watt electric heater, a programmable light, and a thermostatically controlled ceiling exhaust fan.
